In my numerous years of tutoring experience, I came across diversity of students who struggled in the subjects as they were not able to grasp the concepts taught in school. This is due partly to the huge class size in school, teachers having to finish the syllabus in limited time and hence likely taught at a pace that cannot cater to the weaker students. This led to students' loss of confidence and interest in the subject as they were not able to understand what is being taught.
Every child is different and hence tutoring is tailored to the needs of each child. The weaker ones need to build stronger foundation while the academically stronger ones need further stretching to realise their full potential. I used a variety of assessment books that are suitable for different abilities. I impart methods to reduce mistakes and to check their answers. Some work given would be timed so as to improve their speed in solving the problems. I also go through past years school exam papers selectively (not mindlessly) and choose questions suitable for the child to practise on. My greatest satisfaction was seeing the huge improvement in their grades as well as their confidence!
After completing my secondary education at Raffles Girls' and college education at Hwa Chong, I did my Degree of Accountancy at NTU. Thereafter I worked in the audit/accounting sector for more than 14 years before becoming a stay home mum. As a stay home mum, I have 12 years of tutoring my own children and hence familiar with the school syllabus. I did a short stinct of relief teaching in Principles of Accounts in a secondary school from which I discover the joy of teaching. This led me to take up tutoring full time as I like interacting with children and teenagers. They too relate well with me!
