You have limited experience and are still working on getting the ball into play. You're developing basic stroke fundamentals and beginning to understand court positioning. Continue taking lessons and practice regularly to improve consistency.
You can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of similar ability. You are familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles play. Focus on improving stroke consistency and understanding basic strategy.
You are learning to judge where the ball is going and can sustain a rally of slow pace. Your strokes are developing but lack consistency when trying for directional control or power. Work on footwork and anticipation.
You can fairly consistently hit medium-paced shots while demonstrating more success with directional control. You have improved court coverage and are developing teamwork in doubles. Continue refining all strokes and improving shot selection.
You have achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lack depth and variety. You show more aggressive net play and improved teamwork. Focus on adding spin, improving footwork, and developing a more complete game.
You have reliable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots. You can use lobs, overheads, approach shots, and volleys with some success. Work on consistency under pressure and strategic play.
You have developed your use of power and spin and can handle pace. You have sound footwork and can control depth of shots. You can vary strategies and styles of play in competitive situations. Excellent club-level player.
You have good shot anticipation and frequently have an outstanding shot or exceptional consistency around which your game may be structured. You can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls. You have excellent footwork and court coverage.
You have mastered power and/or consistency as a major weapon. You can vary strategies and styles of play in a competitive situation and hit dependable shots in a stress situation. You are a highly competitive tournament player.
You have had intensive training for national tournament competition at the junior and collegiate levels and have obtained a sectional and/or national ranking. This is typically a player with college varsity experience.
You have extensive satellite and futures tournament experience. You have trained extensively and compete regularly in high-level tournaments. This level represents elite competitive players.
You are a world-class player competing at the highest professional levels including Grand Slams and ATP/WTA tour events. This represents the absolute elite of professional tennis.
