I firmly believe that reading should be as multi-sensorial as possible and my lesson planning always seeks to incorporate the use of different tools to facilitate what I set out to teach. This ensures that my students learn to read and comprehend in a holistic manner that involves all senses – thus, ensuring that when they walk out of my classroom, they walk out with the knowledge that they have learnt something new that they can now seek to apply in their daily lives henceforth.
I have also worked with children and teenagers who have learning difficulties such as dyslexia and behavioural difficulties such as ADHD and anger management issues which compound existing learning difficulties. I have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach in teaching phonics to learners with dyslexia and my time with the Dyslexia Association of Singapore has taught me various strategies in teaching learners who have behavioural difficulties as well.
Teaching is not just about imparting knowledge but in today's customer service oriented society, it is also important to develop the students’ passion in reading, literacy, comprehension of text types as well as writing techniques.
